Equipment

All fishing gear, waders and terminal tackle supplied. However, You are welcome to bring you own gear if you prefer. All other equipment you will need during the tour is supplied except for your fly fishing rod, reel, personal tackle and clothing. If yo are a fly fisherman, I recommend floating line and a 3-6 weight rod. 8 weight is too big to fish the smaller streams and a 2 weight will not get you accurate presentations in the skinny water through the alpine breeze typical in the early summer. Leader best short 6-9 foot – sometimes I prefer to use tippet straight to fly line in the higher river sections as only three-four foot of it is on the water.

For single day tours, you will need to bring a Sunglasses, Hat and Sunscreen and good walking boots that you don't mind getting wet - not sneakers.

For the overnight tours, I recommend you also bring with you:

  • A thick woollen or Fleece jumper/jacket.
  • A waterproof jacket or Anorak – not a shower jacket.
  • A wide brimmed hat. One that packs down is better.
  • Sunscreen, Panadol, Compression Bandage, personal medication - (Three first Aid kits will be provided).
  • At least one sets of long johns - woollen preferred.
  • An under shit. Prefereably a woollen one long sleeves preferable for sleeping in.
  • Leather boots – hiking or wading boots will do.
  • 2 pairs of woollen sock – not cotton.
  • A camera – the more robust the better – a couple of Ziplock bags or a waterproof bag is a good investment.

Please do not bring heavy full-length waders. For the small increase in fishing comfort on the occasional water entry, they incur a significant discomfort while travelling in and out of the area with the added risk of overloading yourself and the bike. I have a set of lightweight thigh waders that I can loan if required. However, I don’t usually use them on these trips as you do not need to enter the water and they slow down walking progress and comfort when moving from spot to spot.

Communications

Mobile phone reception is very limited in these areas. Telstra seems to have the higher coverage but that will only get you limited coverage while moving in and out of the snowy mountains on day one and day two. If you need to make some calls before we depart from civilisation, let me know beforehand and I can make our stops at good reception areas.

We will have good Communications with each other VIA UHF radios while fishing and travelling. These cover up to 1.5km line-of-site and we will also carry a registered EPIRB in case of an emergency.
